the real best day

Braeden and I were talking tonight about how people always say "Our wedding day was the best day of our lives." Heck, I've even said it. But you know what? The actual day wasn't really all that great: it rained, it was unnaturally cold, I was stressed about getting everyone where they needed to be on time and hoping that all of our prior arrangements would work out as well as we imagined they would. I was worried that our families who had traveled thousands of miles to be here with us just to stand in the cold rain were ticked and thinking, "Maybe this trip wasn't really worth all this hassle after all" and I just wanted everyone to have a good experience. Even after the wedding day itself was technically over we still had two more receptions to attend so our "honeymoon" week was just like a short intermission between acts in a play: in all honesty our wedding day was not the happiest or best or even most memorable day of our lives.

But being married has been wonderful. And I think that's what people mean when they say that their wedding was the best day: it's what that day represented more than what it was. It's days like today that are really the best days: lazy mornings, time with friends, time with just the two of us, things to do but not too much to do, time to relax but also time to get a few things done that have been weighing on our minds. And these are the days to make the most of in life: the days when you feel contented and productive and rested and happy together. Because harder days will come and when they do it will be important to remember the good days and that they will come again, even if at times they can seem impossibly far away.

this is crazy. kyle and I had almost this same conversation this week. he only calls our wedding day the best day because it enabled these days.
